The One District One Product (ODOP) initiative in Uttar Pradesh has empowered cities and towns by leveraging their unique strengths, creating individual identities. Launched in 2018, this scheme has opened up diverse opportunities for residents, transforming them into economic centers. The state’s export numbers reflect the success of ODOP, with a significant increase from Rs 58,000 crore to Rs 93,000 crore by 2024.
The district-centric product approach has not only enhanced grassroots exports but also facilitated the integration of small producers into global markets. Each of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts has seen traditional crafts and industries flourish, supported by government aid. This strategy has propelled products like Moradabad’s brassware, Banaras’s handloom weaving, Firozabad’s glassware, Kannauj’s perfumes, and Bhadohi’s carpets to international acclaim.
ODOP has effectively tackled the historical regional economic disparities in Uttar Pradesh. Formerly centralized growth in urban areas has now decentralized to smaller districts and towns, fostering economic vitality. This shift has generated more local job opportunities and reduced migration rates significantly.
The initiative has notably boosted the incomes of artisans and small business owners. Through the ODOP Skill Development and Toolkit Distribution Scheme, numerous artisans have been trained and equipped with modern tools. Over 1.25 lakh toolkits have been disbursed, enhancing product quality and enabling local goods to access national and global markets.
Projects worth Rs 6,000 crore have been sanctioned under the ODOP Margin Money Scheme, directly benefiting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This injection of funds has invigorated entrepreneurship, especially in rural and semi-urban regions, contributing to economic growth and sustainability.
