Celebrations broke out in Congress circles as V. D. Satheesan was declared Kerala’s next Chief Minister, leaving Ramesh Chennithala’s residence in a somber mood. Chennithala, a senior Congress leader and a top contender for the position, faced disappointment as the decision favored Satheesan. Known for his loyalty and decades of service to the party, Chennithala had high hopes of clinching the top post.
Having served as a minister at a young age of 27 under Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, Chennithala’s seniority and experience were believed to work in his favor. Despite optimism within his camp until Thursday morning, a crucial call from senior party leader Rahul Gandhi signaled a different outcome. Following the call, Chennithala retreated to his room, emerging later to the news of Satheesan’s selection.
Amidst speculations and media frenzy, Chennithala’s absence from the scene hinted at his disappointment. Reports suggested that he was en route to his hometown, Haripad, possibly missing the Congress Legislative Party meeting where Satheesan would be formally elected CLP leader. This move signifies a significant shift within the Congress party leadership in Kerala.
