The death toll from Venezuela’s recent twin earthquakes has tragically climbed to 3,342, with more than 16,000 individuals sustaining injuries, as reported by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez. Rodriguez shared on Telegram that the count of rescued individuals stands at 6,462. Additionally, an official report indicated that 17,345 people have been displaced in the aftermath of the earthquakes.
Since the powerful magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck on June 24, Venezuela has experienced nearly 1,000 aftershocks, according to the latest update. Authorities have responded by establishing 80 temporary camps to aid those who have been displaced or affected by the natural disasters. Moreover, as of the recent update, approximately 29,567 rescuers, including 3,281 from abroad, are still actively engaged in search and rescue operations to locate survivors.
Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, has declared a seven-day period of national mourning to honor the victims of the devastating earthquakes that shook the nation on June 24. Rodriguez expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and announced the mourning period through a social media statement. She emphasized solidarity with those affected by the calamity and vowed to provide support and protection to them during this challenging time.
Authorities have noted that there are still tens of thousands of individuals unaccounted for following the earthquakes. In a separate declaration, Rodriguez had previously announced a seven-day national mourning period to pay tribute to the earthquake victims. Meanwhile, under ‘Operation Amistad,’ Indian medical teams are actively engaged in offering humanitarian aid to the earthquake survivors in Venezuela. The Indian Army’s Field Hospital has been instrumental in providing medical care, receiving heartfelt appreciation from survivors and their families for the compassionate assistance rendered.
