Veteran Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has announced his retirement from international cricket after the fifth Ashes Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Khawaja, who called a press conference with his family by his side, expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships cricket has given him.
In a career spanning 15 years, Khawaja has achieved over 8000 international runs across formats, playing in 87 Tests, 40 ODIs, and nine T20Is. He will retire as one of Australia’s top run-scorers, with the potential to surpass Michael Hussey’s tally in his final Test.
Khawaja, known for his 16 Test centuries, including two in ODIs, will conclude his career in Sydney, where he made his Test debut in 2011. His recent resurgence with seven centuries in two years culminated in a World Test Championship win in 2023. Khawaja plans to continue playing for the Brisbane Heat in the BBL and remain available for Queensland’s Sheffield Shield team.
