Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa, known for his roles in Bollywood films like Mary Kom, died in Kathmandu at the age of 68. Thapa passed away in a Kathmandu hospital after his health suddenly worsened. Hospital authorities reported that he was brought in unconscious and was later pronounced dead due to a suspected cardiac arrest.
Thapa was a prominent figure in Nepali cinema, having appeared in over 300 films and also working extensively in Bollywood and Bhojpuri movies for many years. He gained fame for his role as ‘Rate Kaila’ in the Nepali film Chino, establishing himself as a sought-after antagonist in the industry. His portrayal of menacing villains in Nepali cinema further solidified his reputation.
In Indian cinema, Thapa was recognized for his performance in Mary Kom, where he played a trainer to Priyanka Chopra’s character. His work in the film earned him a nomination at the Filmfare Awards. Thapa made his Bollywood debut with ‘Ek Duuje Ke Liye’ and went on to feature in various Hindi, Tamil, and Bhojpuri productions.
Before his acting career, Thapa started as a model in Mumbai in the mid-1970s and was actively engaged in sports, playing professional football for clubs in Bombay. Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushila Karki expressed her condolences over his demise, highlighting his versatile artistry and significant contributions to both Nepali and Indian cinema.
