Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan is scheduled for a two-day visit to Karnataka starting Saturday. He will be in Bengaluru to partake in a religious event and a conclave on a drug-free India. On the first day, he will join the 517th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Nadaprabhu Sri Kempegowda. Radhakrishnan recently marked ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ by honoring those who defended democratic and constitutional values during the 1975 Emergency period. This event coincides with India’s remembrance of the 51st anniversary of the Emergency declaration by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Vice President emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional principles and building a just, free, equal, and fraternal India.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also observed ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ across various states to remember the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975. The party conducted programs nationwide to highlight the Emergency’s impact on democratic institutions and civil liberties. The 1975 Indian Emergency, lasting 21 months, saw the suspension of key democratic norms and civil liberties, considered a contentious and authoritarian period in India’s history.
