Seeking to capitalize on the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, C. Joseph Vijay formally requested to establish the next state government after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the largest in the 234-member Assembly. Vijay, accompanied by senior TVK leaders, met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to present his claim.
Vijay handed a formal letter to Governor Arlekar, expressing the party’s readiness to demonstrate its majority in the Assembly within the specified timeframe. This move marks a significant constitutional progression towards the formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu under Vijay’s leadership.
Despite securing 108 seats in the elections, making TVK the primary party, Vijay’s party fell short of the 118-seat majority required to independently form a government. Following his unanimous election as the legislative party leader by TVK legislators, Vijay proceeded to stake his claim before the Governor.
Hectic political deliberations are ongoing in Chennai, with various parties deliberating their strategies post-election. While the Congress has conditionally pledged support to TVK, other parties like Left factions and regional groups are contemplating their positions. The ruling DMK, facing election defeat, is internally deliberating its future course. The upcoming days are deemed critical in shaping the next government’s structure and stability in Tamil Nadu.
