A protest erupted in Ranchi, Jharkhand, as villagers, farmers, and tribal community members rallied against the proposed construction of a medical college and hospital named ‘RIMS-2’ in Nagri. The demonstrators, led by tribal organizations and the Nagri Zameen Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence but were halted by police near Block Chowk in Kanke.
Protesters voiced concerns that fertile agricultural land in Nagri should not be used for the medical institution, as it would harm local farmers who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. They emphasized that the issue was not just about land but also about their identity, culture, and future aspirations. While supporting development, they opposed the acquisition of productive land under the guise of progress.
The agitation, involving men, women, and youth, faced barricades set up by the administration near Kanke Block Chowk. Authorities aimed to redirect the protesters towards the Kanke Block Office to prevent them from reaching the Chief Minister’s residence. Despite obstacles, the demonstrators vowed to find alternative ways to communicate their grievances to the government and affirmed their commitment to safeguarding their land rights.
In response to the escalating situation, additional police forces have been deployed in the area to ensure law and order. Local opposition has persisted against the RIMS-2 project in Nagri, with concerns raised by villagers and farmer groups over the potential impact on numerous families due to the acquisition of agricultural land for the medical facility.
