Villarreal has announced that coach Marcelino Garcia Toral will be leaving the club at the end of the current season. Marcelino has been in charge for two and a half years during his second term, guiding the team into the Champions League twice. The club confirmed the news following a 5-1 victory over Levante, securing their spot in next season’s Champions League and placing third in La Liga.
The decision for Marcelino to depart was made public in a statement released by Villarreal. The club expressed gratitude to Marcelino for his contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors. The anticipated departure follows unsuccessful contract negotiations earlier in the year between the coach and the club.
Marcelino rejoined Villarreal in November 2023 as the third coach of the season, with the objective of ensuring the team’s La Liga safety. Despite a successful fifth-place finish last season that earned them a Champions League spot, Villarreal’s European campaign was disappointing. The club’s struggles in the Champions League and Copa del Rey may have influenced Marcelino’s exit, despite a strong league performance.
In a recent press conference, Marcelino hinted at his imminent departure, citing the need to adhere to certain timelines based on discussions and mutual agreement. He reflected on the positive changes made during his tenure, emphasizing the rejuvenation of the squad and the desire to part ways amicably when the time comes. Rayo Vallecano coach Inigo Perez is reportedly the frontrunner to succeed Marcelino next season.
