Vinesh Phogat’s husband and coach, Somvir Rathee, has raised doubts about the Wrestling Federation of India’s intentions. This comes after Vinesh, a former World Championships medallist, failed to qualify for the 2026 Asian Games. Rathee alleged that the federation may have hindered Vinesh’s chances during the selection trials.
The setback occurred when Vinesh lost 4-6 to Meenakshi Goyat in the women’s 53kg semifinals at the selection trials. Rathee expressed disappointment in the unfolding events and claimed that the federation’s actions seemed to work against Vinesh.
Rathee mentioned feeling cheated and stated that they contested many decisions, suggesting that the federation did not support Vinesh. Despite the challenges faced, Rathee emphasized Vinesh’s resilience and determination to bounce back through training and strong performances.
Vinesh herself criticized the Wrestling Federation of India, alleging that officials celebrated her defeat. She claimed that some within the organization wished for her failure. Vinesh vowed to return stronger and prove her critics wrong with her performance.
Vinesh’s participation in the trials was uncertain until the last moment due to initial restrictions by the WFI. After legal interventions and discussions, she was eventually allowed to compete in her preferred 53kg category. Despite a strong start in the trials, Vinesh’s hopes were dashed by Meenakshi Goyat’s victory in the semifinals.
