A violent clash erupted between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Jagatdal, North 24 Parganas, resulting in multiple injuries. The confrontation, which involved stone-pelting, firing, and crude bombs, left at least three individuals injured, including a Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) jawan with a bullet wound to the leg.
The incident unfolded on Sunday night near a police station following allegations by BJP workers that posters and flags for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally had been removed. As BJP workers went to the police station to report the incident, Trinamool supporters gathered, leading to a heated argument that escalated into violence.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed late at night, with large crowds pushing and shouting as police and security personnel intervened to restore order. Damaged vehicles and debris littered the area in the aftermath of the clash.
BJP candidate Rajesh Singh from Jagatdal lodged a complaint at the local police station, accompanied by Noapara candidate Arjun Singh, as the situation turned violent. Meanwhile, Trinamool candidate Amit Gupta accused BJP workers of attacking their cadre, damaging party flags, and vandalizing a party office.
Both parties traded blame, with BJP candidate Pawan Singh accusing Trinamool Congress of disrupting a street meeting and fomenting unrest. Pawan Singh highlighted the sequence of events, including the pelting of stones and bombs at their homes, resulting in injuries, including to a CISF jawan.
Police are actively monitoring the situation, with ongoing investigations into the incident.
