The death toll from the recent accident at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has climbed to nine, with a contract worker named Pydiraju succumbing to injuries at Seven Hills Hospital. The tragic incident occurred when a ladle carrying molten steel exploded, resulting in eight fatalities and six injuries. Officials reported that the explosion led to a significant leakage of molten steel, which was at a scorching temperature of around 1,500 degrees Celsius.
A poignant video message from Pydiraju, recorded en route to the hospital, went viral on social media, where he expressed concerns about his family’s welfare. Currently, five injured workers are receiving medical care at two hospitals. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, after visiting the site, announced compensation measures, including Rs 25 lakh and a job at the plant for the families of deceased workers, and Rs 10 lakh for seriously injured workers in the ICU.
Pawan Kalyan further disclosed plans for financial assistance to employees, stating that permanent employees would receive Rs 1.72 crore under retirement benefits, while contract employees would be granted Rs 45.75 lakh. Additionally, the plant management will cover all expenses for the treatment of the injured. He assured that the education of deceased workers’ children will be supported, and families can reside in plant quarters rent-free until retirement age.
Moreover, a committee from Bokaro Steel Plant will conduct a thorough investigation into the accident, with subsequent actions based on the committee’s findings. The affected families residing outside the plant township will be offered quarters within the township if they choose to relocate.
