Five-time World Champion Vishwanathan Anand will no longer hold the position of Deputy President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) if the current President, Arkady Dvorkovich, secures a third term. Instead, Timur Turlov, President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, has been named as the candidate for the deputy role.
Anand, who has been FIDE’s Deputy President since 2022, will continue to be a vital part of Dvorkovich’s team and actively support the upcoming presidential elections later this year. Dvorkovich, who has led FIDE since 2018, announced his intention to run for a third term during the 46th Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan in September.
Reflecting on his tenure, Dvorkovich emphasized his commitment to strengthening FIDE and outlined his vision for another term, focusing on global expansion, youth development, and enhancing chess programs. Anand publicly endorsed Dvorkovich’s decision and expressed confidence in their shared goals for the global chess community.
Dvorkovich’s campaign for a third term aims to provide practical support to member federations, enhance digital capabilities, foster youth initiatives, build stronger partnerships, and ensure FIDE’s responsiveness to global chess needs. Anand pledged to continue contributing his expertise to FIDE’s initiatives, particularly in supporting emerging federations and promoting chess growth worldwide.
