The voter turnout in the West Bengal Assembly elections was 18.76%, while in Tamil Nadu, it reached 17.69% by 9 a.m. on Thursday, as per data from the Election Commission of India. Polling started for 152 assembly constituencies in West Bengal across 16 districts in the first phase of the two-phase crucial Assembly polls. Voter enthusiasm was evident with long queues forming at various polling stations, indicating significant public interest in the elections.
In West Bengal, polling took place in 16 districts including Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda in North Bengal, and Murshidabad, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, and Birbhum in South Bengal. The second phase of elections for the remaining 142 assembly constituencies in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29, with results to be announced on May 4.
Simultaneously, voting began in Tamil Nadu for all 234 constituencies, with over 5.73 crore eligible voters deciding the fate of 4,023 candidates in a fiercely contested four-cornered battle. The electoral landscape features the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making it one of the most competitive elections in recent times.
The voting process started early in the morning in Tamil Nadu, witnessing a large voter turnout at polling booths, reflecting the strong public interest in participating in the democratic exercise. Political parties are closely observing the voter turnout as it is expected to have a significant impact on the election outcome. The counting of votes in Tamil Nadu is set for May 4, determining the formation of the next government in the state.
