The global chip trade weakening has brought positive news for India, with foreign portfolio investor (FPI) equity investments reaching Rs 14,945 crore by July 24. Debt inflows remain strong, partly due to government debt taxation reforms. Analysts note that while FPIs have been selling in markets like South Korea and Taiwan, the situation presents an opportunity for India.

Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd., mentioned that the weakening chip trade benefits India. However, concerns arise from the spike in Brent crude prices following West Asia conflict escalation, which could impact India’s macros if sustained. Vijayakumar highlighted that FPI behavior in India is likely to change if crude prices stabilize.

Market conditions were weak and volatile, with crude oil price surges and geopolitical tensions affecting investor sentiment. Despite resilient domestic macroeconomic indicators and stock-specific opportunities during the earnings season, high energy prices and global uncertainties overshadowed these positives. Consequently, the Sensex and Nifty experienced declines due to foreign institutional investor (FII) selling and cautious investor behavior.

Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking Ltd., noted that FII selling, especially in financial stocks, weighed on domestic equities amid rising bond yields and geopolitical risks. On the domestic front, encouraging macroeconomic data was observed, with India’s foreign exchange reserves increasing to $675.16 billion, providing external sector stability. Analysts anticipate the upcoming week to be influenced by global policy events, domestic macroeconomic releases, and ongoing earnings reports.
