Traditional artisans and craftspeople in West Bengal can now access benefits through the PM Vishwakarma scheme, a Union government initiative led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Launched by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in September 2023, the scheme aims to uplift India’s traditional artisans by providing training, financial support, and market access.
The scheme seeks to transform livelihoods and preserve India’s rich craft traditions. Discussions on its implementation in West Bengal took place in a meeting between Dr. Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner (MSME), and Manoj Agarwal, Chief Secretary of West Bengal. The focus was on speedy implementation, improving beneficiary identification, enhancing skill development, and reaching out to traditional artisans and craftspeople.
The Chief Secretary acknowledged the support of the Union Ministry of MSME in developing the sector in West Bengal and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to effectively implementing Central sector schemes. Currently, there are 7.79 lakh artisans and craftspeople enrolled under PM Vishwakarma in West Bengal.
Under PM Vishwakarma, artisans receive structured training programs to enhance their skills and adopt modern techniques. They also get financial assistance of Rs 15,000 for tools and equipment, along with collateral-free loans up to Rs 3 lakh for business expansion. The scheme further supports artisans in adopting digital payments and connecting with larger markets to sell their products.
