The West Bengal Assembly elections are witnessing a high-stakes battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the main opposition BJP. Union Home Minister Amit Shah compared the Trinamool Congress government to a “setting sun,” criticizing its alleged inefficiencies and ineptitude. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took a dig at the ruling party during a recent rally.
The electoral contest in Bengal has escalated with sharp exchanges of words between the political parties. Amit Shah’s comment about Kolkata and Modi’s reference to a “jhalmuri break” have added fuel to the ongoing verbal sparring. The state saw significant voter turnout in the first phase of elections, with expectations of a record-breaking participation rate.
The first phase of polling covered 152 Assembly constituencies across 16 districts in West Bengal. The turnout surpassed 89.93% by 5 p.m., indicating a strong voter engagement. The state, under Trinamool Congress rule for 15 years, is divided into two phases for voting this year. The second phase is scheduled for April 29 across 142 Assembly constituencies.
