The West Bengal BJP has called for prompt by-elections to fill the vacancies in two Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency in the state. The Lok Sabha seat awaiting a bypoll is in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas district, left vacant after the sudden demise of Trinamool Congress’s Haji Nurul Islam in 2024. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya emphasized the need for the Basirhat bypoll, along with by-elections for two Assembly constituencies, during a recent visit to Basirhat.
Bhattacharya instructed the party’s Basirhat district to initiate organizational preparations and candidate selections. BJP’s state spokesman Debjit Sarkar highlighted the prolonged vacancy of the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, urging the Election Commission of India to announce the by-election date promptly. The two Assembly constituencies awaiting bypolls are Nandigram in East Midnapore district and Rejinagar in Murshidabad district, known for its minority population.
In the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari contested and won from both Bhabanipur in South Kolkata and Nandigram. Adhikari’s victory in Bhabanipur led to the necessity of a bypoll in Nandigram. Similarly, Humayun Kabir, founder of Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), won from Naoda and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies in Murshidabad district, triggering the need for a by-election in Rejinagar after retaining Naoda.
