West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari provided compensation cheques worth Rs 5,00,000 each to the families of 11 migrant workers who lost their lives in an accident at NHPC Limited’s under-construction tunnel in Namchi, Sikkim, on July 20.
Adhikari, during his visit, also assured one member from each of the bereaved families a job as a home guard in the state police force. He emphasized the lack of employment opportunities in West Bengal, leading many youths to seek work as migrant laborers in other states.
Addressing the media, Adhikari highlighted the efforts of the state government to generate job prospects, urging migrant workers to consider returning gradually. He outlined plans to facilitate employment in various sectors, including industries and government roles, aiming to reverse the trend of out-migration for work.
The Chief Minister further disclosed initiatives to reopen 12 out of 25 closed tea gardens in North Bengal within three months. Additionally, he announced the allocation of land to reputed milk-products manufacturing companies in South Bengal and North Bengal to establish manufacturing facilities, aiming to create more job opportunities.
