West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will gradually assume responsibility for providing mid-day meals in state-run schools across the state. Initially starting in Kolkata, ISKCON will extend this service to schools in Nadia district and eventually to all districts in West Bengal. Adhikari emphasized that nutritious food will be prioritized for the students.
Previously, eggs were part of the mid-day meals, raising concerns when ISKCON took over the service in Kolkata. Adhikari clarified that students from ordinary families will receive nutritious meals, without specifying the exact food items. He highlighted the importance of organizations like ISKCON in promoting selfless human service and ensuring quality nutrition for students.
Adhikari also mentioned the need to address malnutrition among students from middle-class, lower-middle-class, and economically backward families who rely on the mid-day meal scheme. By involving ISKCON, he aims to prevent irregularities that occurred during the previous government’s administration of the program. The Chief Minister stressed the significance of providing good quality, nutritious meals to school children.
