West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee introduced two women-focused programs by Kolkata Police to enhance women’s safety in the city, especially during late hours. The initiatives aim to boost women’s confidence and provide immediate assistance. Pink Booths, staffed by female officers, will operate at key intersections from evening to midnight, offering direct assistance to women in need. Additionally, ‘SHINING’ all-women mobile patrol teams will monitor major city roads from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., focusing on areas frequented by working women at night. Banerjee highlighted Kolkata’s reputation as a safe city and expressed confidence that these initiatives will further strengthen safety measures.
The new measures come in response to recent incidents of molestation in Kolkata, including cases of harassment inside moving vehicles during late hours. The Pink Booths and ‘SHINING’ patrol teams aim to ensure swift responses, enhance police accessibility, and conduct proactive patrolling to prevent crimes, creating a secure environment for women in Kolkata.
