West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed concern over the tragic tunnel collapse in Sikkim and pledged full cooperation to the Sikkim government. The collapse occurred at an under-construction site of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Namchi District.
At least 10 individuals lost their lives, with several others trapped, following the collapse of the NHPC’s Teesta State VI hydroelectric project tunnel in Sikkim. Adhikari mentioned that he had spoken with the Sikkim Chief Minister to assess the situation and noted that some affected workers might be from West Bengal.
Adhikari informed that state Minister Bishal Lama and the District Magistrate of Darjeeling are heading to the incident site to provide immediate assistance and coordinate on-ground efforts. He also assured the Sikkim Chief Minister of full support from the West Bengal government during this challenging time.
“My thoughts are with the families of the victims. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and the safe rescue of all those who are still trapped,” added the Chief Minister. Reports suggest that a methane gas explosion caused the tragedy, with ongoing search-and-rescue operations to save the remaining trapped workers.
