West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will preside over a crucial meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, to expedite the census process in the state. The decision to kickstart the census process was made during the first meeting of the new cabinet under Adhikari’s leadership on May 11.
Following this decision, the state government issued a notification delegating responsibilities to officials at various levels to ensure the completion of the census work. District-level officials such as divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and others have been tasked with additional responsibilities for this purpose.
Additionally, officials at the municipal and urban levels have been directed to carry out the census work. Adhikari will chair the upcoming meeting to assess the work progress and explore ways to hasten the process.
The meeting will focus on census preparation, staff recruitment, training, data collection methods, and ensuring effective coordination with the Union government. There may also be discussions on the potential use of digital data collection methods, including a special mobile application for door-to-door information gathering.
The Directorate of Census Operations, West Bengal, plans to utilize a mobile app for data collection and offer a “self-enumeration” option for individuals to submit their details online. Enumerators will then verify and upload the data to a central repository for official records.
