West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is set to convene a crucial meeting to assess the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government’s progress in its initial two months. The meeting will focus on evaluating the status of various development and welfare projects launched under his leadership.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister will also examine the existing law and order situation in the state. Additionally, CM Adhikari is scheduled to preside over a significant state cabinet meeting, with the primary agenda being the discussion on introducing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in West Bengal.
A source familiar with the matter revealed that the UCC bill’s draft will be presented for approval by the state Cabinet during the meeting. A committee led by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been tasked with finalizing the bill within the next four weeks. The proposed legislation aims to establish a uniform civil law system in the state, similar to Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Assam.
The Chief Minister recently assured that certain tribal and indigenous communities would be exempt from the UCC, following precedents set by other states. The implementation of the UCC in West Bengal, as promised in the BJP’s election manifesto, will unify personal laws across the state, aligning with the government’s commitment.
