The West Bengal unit of Congress has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Manish Gupta, a former state minister, and bureaucrat, for his involvement in the police firing incident that resulted in the deaths of 13 youth Congress workers during a protest rally on July 21, 1993. Gupta, who served as the state Home Secretary at the time of the incident, was associated with both the Trinamool Congress and the Left Front regime in the state.

Gupta, who transitioned to the Trinamool Congress before the 2011 Assembly elections, held various political positions, including serving as a Minister and a Rajya Sabha member. Following the recent defeat of the Trinamool Congress in the state elections, Gupta announced his resignation from the party and retirement from politics.

The current Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, presented a report from the Justice Susanta Chatterjee Commission, which investigated the 1993 police firing incident. Adhikari revealed that the firing was carried out under Gupta’s direction when he was the Home Secretary. He also mentioned that the report had not been disclosed during the previous regime led by Mamata Banerjee.

In response to the report, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) has filed an FIR against Gupta, seeking a fair investigation and accountability for all involved parties. The state Congress president, Suvankar Sarkar, emphasized the party’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims of the tragic incident and urged the implementation of the promises made by CM Adhikari.
