The West Bengal government has assigned the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the encounter killing of Pravas Mondal, one of the individuals accused in the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur. Mondal was shot during a police encounter after attempting to flee by grabbing a police officer’s firearm and firing at them.
An insider from the state secretariat of Nabanna mentioned that a judicial probe, following regulations, has already commenced regarding the incident. The CID has been tasked with examining the encounter incident due to jurisdictional reasons, as it falls under the Baruipur Police District in South 24 Parganas district.
The encounter involved Mondal being shot by a police officer in what was claimed to be an act of self-defense. He was hit by two bullets, resulting in his death. Mondal’s family members have expressed their belief that his actions warranted such consequences, refusing to claim his body after the autopsy. A judicial probe into the encounter has also been initiated as required by law.
