The West Bengal government has replaced the public prosecutor in the Tamanna Khatun murder case following requests from the family. Bivas Chattopadhyay, known for ensuring swift convictions in such cases, has taken over from the previous prosecutor, Subedi Sanyal. The victim’s mother, Sabina Iyasmin Sheikh, had repeatedly asked the former Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to appoint Chattopadhyay, which was now fulfilled by the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari.
Chattopadhyay’s appointment came after Sheikh met Chief Minister Adhikari to seek expedited justice in the case. The mother of Tamanna Khatun expressed her gratitude to Adhikari for the arrest of five absconding accused persons and for appointing Chattopadhyay as the new public prosecutor. The minor girl was tragically killed in a blast on June 23 last year in Kaliganj, Nadia district, during a victory procession following a bypoll result announcement.
Tamanna’s mother, a CPI(M) candidate, faced defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly polls against the Trinamool Congress candidate, Alifa Ahmed. The incident occurred when Trinamool Congress activists allegedly attacked the girl’s residence with crude bombs, resulting in her death on the spot.
