The West Bengal government has officially authorized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to prosecute Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. This permission is specifically for the R.G. Kar financial irregularities case. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced this decision on social media.
Adhikari clarified that the permission granted by the state government pertains only to the ED’s investigation into the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar. Simultaneously, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking into both the financial irregularities case and the rape and murder incident involving a junior doctor at the same hospital in August 2024. Adhikari expressed his commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice.
In a social media post, Adhikari highlighted the importance of this step in granting permission to the ED. He criticized the previous Trinamool Congress government for obstructing the investigation process. Adhikari emphasized the need for swift identification and punishment of the real culprits in the Sister Abhaya case, seeking justice for the people of Bengal and praying for the victim’s soul.
The Chief Minister had recently taken action by suspending three Indian Police Service officers involved in the initial investigation of the rape and murder case. Among those suspended were former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and two former Deputy Commissioners, Indira Mukerjee and Abhishek Gupta. The case has also gained political significance, with the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, now serving as a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator in North 24 Parganas district.
