The West Bengal government is revolutionizing its employee attendance system by allowing staff to mark their presence using mobile phones within office premises. This initiative eliminates the need for separate biometric hardware machines, streamlining the process and saving costs. The Finance Department has issued a notification to implement this modern system promptly, urging departments to explore software solutions for seamless integration.

The traditional biometric machines faced operational challenges in various departments due to maintenance issues, prompting the shift to a mobile-based geo-fencing technology for attendance tracking. This innovation ensures employees can log their attendance within designated department boundaries via a mobile app, enhancing transparency and punctuality. The state is already disseminating guidelines to all government offices for swift adoption.

To enforce punctuality, the State Secretariat Nabanna has mandated a ‘face recognition’ biometric attendance system since June 15, with plans to extend it to all state government offices by July 31. All officers and employees, except department heads, must register their presence using the face recognition device upon entry and exit. Notably, tardiness after 10:15 a.m. will be marked as ‘late,’ while arrivals post-11 a.m. will be deemed ‘absent.’ Early departures before 5:15 p.m. will also be recorded accordingly.
