The West Bengal government is set to transfer police officers who have served in their positions for three years or more, following directives from the Election Commission. A formal notification regarding this decision is expected to be released soon, as confirmed by a state secretariat official. The transfer directive will specifically target officers stationed in their home districts or those who have remained in the same role for an extended period.
As per the Election Commission’s guidelines dated December 21, 2023, and December 23, 2008, Sub-Inspector level police officers meeting the specified criteria will be subject to mandatory transfers. State government sources have disclosed that senior IPS officers will supervise the transfer process within their respective zones.
The transfer oversight responsibilities have been allocated to key officers, with the ADG and IGP of South Bengal set to manage the Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, and Howrah Police Commissionerates alongside their existing duties. Similarly, the ADG and IGP of the Western Zone will oversee the Asansol-Durgapur and Chandannagar Police Commissionerates in addition to their designated areas. The IGP of the North Bengal region will supervise the Siliguri Police Commissionerate along with their current jurisdiction.
Emphasizing strict adherence to the Election Commission’s instructions, the directive underscores the need for meticulous compliance. In case of any queries or clarifications, concerned parties are instructed to promptly reach out to the ADG and IGP (Legal), West Bengal, or the ADG and IGP (Law and Order). Following the issuance of all transfer orders, a comprehensive report detailing the actions taken must be submitted to the Police Directorate and relevant higher authorities by January 24.
Amidst the final stages of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bengal’s electoral rolls, the state government has initiated the transfer process for police officers in alignment with the directives of the Election Commission.
