West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi has initiated a departmental investigation against Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr. Avik Dey. Dr. Dey’s name was linked to the rape and murder case of a female junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024, as well as a financial irregularities case at the institution.
Dr. Dey, known to be a close associate of former R.G. Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the financial discrepancies at the medical college. The state administration, following Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s directive, has reopened the R.G. Kar cases and suspended three IPS officers over alleged lapses in the initial investigation.
Chief Minister Adhikari confirmed that the fresh inquiry into the R.G. Kar cases will run concurrently with the ongoing CBI investigation. In light of the state’s decision to revisit the R.G. Kar files, Governor R.N. Ravi has instructed a probe against Dr. Avik Dey.
Allegations against Dr. Dey include fostering a “threat culture” in various medical institutions through his associates and allegedly pursuing postgraduate training under the service quota unlawfully. Currently serving as a radiologist at Burdwan Medical College, Dr. Dey faced accusations during the R.G. Kar controversy related to the alleged “threat culture” in medical colleges across the state.
Questions arose regarding Dr. Dey’s presence at the crime scene of the R.G. Kar rape and murder case despite lacking an official role. The controversy escalated when suspended Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee referred to Dr. Dey as a “fingerprint expert” during a press briefing in 2024.
