West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul recently visited College Street in Kolkata to review plans for its transformation into a cultural and academic hub similar to London’s Oxford Street. Accompanied by Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner Smita Pandey and officials, the Minister explored the area and engaged with pedestrians and shopkeepers.
As part of the proposed makeover, a portion of College Street will be designated as a no-vehicle zone, with bookstores set to be relocated to the area. The initiative aims to encourage book lovers to cycle around the vicinity and reduce dependence on digital devices by fostering a renewed interest in reading.
Minister Agnimitra Paul emphasized the introduction of bicycles for visitors, battery-operated cars for the elderly, and the creation of bookstores, notebook shops, and book cafes in the revamped College Street. The plan includes traditional Oxford Street-inspired decorations, vintage lamp-posts, benches, and free Wi-Fi to provide a serene environment for reading and relaxation.
