The West Bengal Police have apprehended all five principal masterminds involved in the lynching of 26-year-old Indrajit Tanti on July 5 in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. Two individuals previously arrested as masterminds were joined by three more, according to an insider from the Baruipur District Police.
The identities of the newly apprehended individuals have not been disclosed by the police until their appearance in a South 24 Parganas district court, where their custody will be sought by the public prosecutor. The violence erupted in the area after the discovery of a 12-year-old girl’s body on July 5, leading to Tanti’s brutal lynching by a mob that suspected his involvement in the girl’s rape and murder.
Three separate FIRs were filed by the police: one related to the crime against the minor girl, another concerning Tanti’s lynching, and a third linked to the widespread hooliganism during the protests. The police, in their investigation, aimed to identify the masterminds responsible for falsely accusing Tanti in the girl’s case.
The Chief Minister is set to visit Baruipur to inaugurate a police outpost in the Suryapur area, where both incidents occurred. Earlier, four individuals were arrested in connection with the crime against the girl, with one of them killed in a confrontation while attempting to flee from police custody after seizing a policeman’s firearm.
