A Bill concerning the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be presented in the West Bengal State Assembly on Monday, marking West Bengal as the fourth Indian state to implement a unified set of civil laws that are applicable to all citizens regardless of religion, caste, or tribe. Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam are the other states that have already adopted the UCC. The decision to introduce the Bill was made during a meeting chaired by Speaker Rathindra Bose within the Assembly premises, with a total of five Bills set to be tabled, including the UCC Bill.
During the meeting, it was agreed that one hour would be allocated for discussing the Bills, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expected to participate in the deliberations. The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, is also scheduled to partake in the discussions. This move aligns with the commitment made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his campaign rallies before the West Bengal Assembly elections, where he pledged to enforce the UCC in West Bengal.
In addition to the UCC Bill, another significant legislation titled “The West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026” will be presented in the Assembly. This bill aims to address anti-social activities within the state and includes provisions for preventive detention of individuals deemed a threat to public safety for up to one year. Furthermore, the state government would be empowered to confiscate the property of those involved in such offenses under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
