West Bengal’s new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, took the oath of office at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. He heads a diverse cabinet in terms of gender, region, and experience. This marks the first BJP government in the state and the first time in 55 years that a Chief Minister is from outside Kolkata.
Suvendu Adhikari, hailing from Purba Medinipur district, played a crucial role in catapulting Mamata Banerjee to power in 2011. The last Chief Minister from outside Kolkata was Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee from Purba Medinipur, whose term ended in 1971, leading the United Front government.
Dilip Ghosh, known for his work under challenging conditions, helped build BJP’s network in West Bengal. He won in the 2016 Assembly elections and led the party to a significant victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Ghosh, a 61-year-old leader, is recognized for his grassroots campaign strategies.
Agnimitra Paul, a 51-year-old fashion designer, was included in the cabinet as a salute to women’s power. She defended the Asansol Dakshin seat with a wider margin this time. Nisith Pramanik and Ashok Kirtania were also included to represent West Bengal’s two largest Scheduled Caste communities.
Nisith Pramanik, representing the Rajbanshis, is a significant voice for over 18% of West Bengal’s largest Scheduled Caste group. Ashok Kirtania, belonging to the Matua socio-religious group, retained the Bangaon Uttar seat in North 24 Parganas district. The BJP also made inroads in tribal areas, with Kshudiram Tudu representing the Santhal tribal community.
