A significant victory came for India’s top men’s doubles duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, as they secured their first BWF circuit title in two years at the Singapore Open. The win not only marked their return from injury setbacks but also boosted their confidence for aiming at an Olympic medal in 2028. Formerly ranked World No.1 and now at No.3 in BWF Rankings, the pair reunited with coach Mathias Boe, now a consultant alongside their main coach Tan Kim Her, which played a crucial role in their recent success.
The Singapore Open posed challenges due to the stadium’s ‘drift,’ a factor the Indian duo struggled with previously. However, they effectively managed this issue in the latest edition, executing their game plan to secure the championship. Despite enduring injury-related setbacks, Satwik and Chirag’s perseverance paid off with a remarkable victory at the Singapore Open, a BWF World Series 750 event where they had struggled to progress beyond the initial rounds since 2017.
In a thrilling final match in Singapore, Satwiksairaj and Chirag staged a comeback from a game down to defeat Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri with scores of 18-21, 21-17, 21-16. Notably, they also ended World No.1 Kim Won-ho and So Song-hae’s 34-match winning streak in the semifinals, marking a significant achievement. Termed the Smash Brothers, the duo expressed their joy and optimism post-victory, highlighting the positive impact of their recent performance on their upcoming competitions and Olympic aspirations.
