When the West Indies face Zimbabwe in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium, they are not underestimating their opponents, treating the match with the same gravity as they would against top teams like India or Australia. Darren Sammy, the former West Indies captain turned head coach, aims to lead his team to another T20 World Cup victory, emphasizing the importance of a win before challenging matches with India and South Africa.

Having topped their preliminary group, the West Indies are set to kick off their Super 8s campaign against Zimbabwe, who surprised by leading Group B after defeating Australia and Sri Lanka. Despite the unexpected matchup, Sammy stresses the need to respect every opponent at this stage of the tournament, highlighting the competitive nature of T20 cricket where any team can emerge victorious on a given day.

Sammy’s team received a boost with all-rounder Romario Shepherd’s return from injury for the crucial Super 8s clash. Shepherd’s impressive performance in the earlier matches, including a five-wicket haul against Scotland, adds depth to the West Indies squad as they gear up for challenging encounters ahead. The coach expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and emphasized the importance of executing their plans effectively to secure victory.

The West Indies coach acknowledged Zimbabwe’s strengths, particularly highlighting tall pacer Blessing Muzarabani as a key player to watch out for in the upcoming match. Sammy emphasized the need to plan for every player in the opposition team, recognizing the threat posed by Zimbabwe while remaining focused on their own strategies for success. Overall, Sammy praised the competitive spirit displayed by Associate teams in the tournament, underscoring the growth of the game and the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket.
