The West Indies cricket team has been penalized for a slow over-rate during the second Test against Sri Lanka. They were fined 10% of their match fee and had two ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points deducted. The sanctions were imposed by Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after the home side fell two overs short of their target.
In line with the ICC Code of Conduct, players face fines for not maintaining the required over-rate. The West Indies players were penalized five percent of their match fee for each over they fell short. Additionally, under the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, the team loses one championship point for every over not bowled in time, resulting in a total deduction of two WTC points.
Despite the penalty, the West Indies remain in eighth place in the WTC standings, but their percentage has dropped to 15. Captain Roston Chase admitted to the offense and accepted the punishment, avoiding a formal hearing. The charges were brought by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Deighton Buttler.
The West Indies celebrated a historic Test series victory over Sri Lanka after 23 years, winning the two-match series 1-0. This triumph marked the first time they secured a series win under Roston Chase’s leadership. Their upcoming Test series will be against Pakistan from July 25 to August 7 in Trinidad.
