Shimron Hetmyer’s aggressive 64 runs propelled West Indies to a total of 182/5 in their 20 overs against Scotland in a Group C encounter of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens. Initially cautious, West Indies reached 33 without loss in the power-play period. Despite losing openers Brandon King and captain Shai Hope quickly, Hetmyer’s rapid 22-ball fifty, the fastest in West Indies men’s World Cup history, took charge of the innings.
Hetmyer, striking at 177.78 with two fours and six sixes, partnered with Rovman Powell for an 81-run stand for the third wicket. Powell’s 24 off 14 balls and Sherfane Rutherford’s late cameo of 26 off 13 deliveries pushed West Indies past the 180-run mark. Scotland’s bowlers, especially Chris Sole and Brad Currie, managed to slow down West Indies’ progress in the middle overs, preventing them from reaching the 200-run mark.
In their innings, Hope and King cautiously started, reaching 27 without loss in four overs. However, Currie’s effective bowling forced the openers to adjust their game on a challenging pitch. Despite the slow start, King accelerated the scoring with a six and two fours in an over, but Scotland fought back by dismissing Hope and King in quick succession, leaving West Indies at 58/2 halfway through their innings.
Hetmyer’s aggressive batting then shifted the momentum as he raced to 33 off 16 balls, neutralizing the tough conditions. His boundary-laden innings, including a quick fifty, propelled West Indies forward. Although Hetmyer and Powell were dismissed, Rutherford’s aggressive hitting ensured West Indies finished with a competitive total of 182/5.
