The White House has urged other nations to join a US-led coalition to protect ships navigating the vital Strait of Hormuz. Referred to as the “Maritime Freedom Construct” (MFC), this initiative involves collaboration between the State Department and US Central Command. The coalition aims to enhance maritime domain awareness and ensure the free flow of commercial shipping through the strait.
The State Department will oversee diplomatic operations, while the Central Command will provide real-time maritime information for shipping and facilitate data sharing among partner militaries. The coalition’s objectives include information sharing, diplomatic coordination, and enforcement of sanctions, as outlined in an internal cable. Foreign governments are being encouraged to participate as diplomatic and/or military partners to strengthen collective efforts in safeguarding navigation and supporting the global economy.
The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a critical issue in the strained relations between the US and Iran. While Iran targets non-compliant vessels in the strait, the US Navy has imposed a comprehensive blockade on ships traveling to and from Iranian ports. President Donald Trump has indicated that the naval blockade will persist until Iran reaches a satisfactory agreement with the US regarding its nuclear program. The ongoing conflict has impacted global energy prices and geopolitical dynamics, with uncertainties surrounding the potential outcomes.
