The White House is calling on Congress to approve sweeping election reforms proposed by President Donald Trump. The proposed SAVE America Act aims to enhance voting integrity and ensure that only American citizens participate in US elections. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the significance of the legislation, describing it as crucial in the nation’s history. The Act comprises five key provisions as outlined by the President, including the requirement for voters to present identification before casting their ballots.

The first provision mandates voters to show ID when voting in American elections, a measure widely supported by the public across party lines. Additionally, the Act would necessitate proof of citizenship during voter registration to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. Leavitt highlighted the importance of this requirement, particularly in light of increased illegal immigration in recent years. The legislation also addresses the issue of universal mail-in ballots, proposing their elimination while allowing exceptions for certain categories of voters.

Furthermore, the SAVE America Act includes provisions beyond election procedures, such as the permanent ban on men competing in women’s sports and restrictions on gender-related medical procedures for minors. Leavitt urged bipartisan support for the legislation, emphasizing its role in fortifying election integrity and upholding democracy. The President is urging swift action by Congress to pass this significant legislation and send it for his immediate approval.

Election laws have emerged as a contentious issue in the US, notably following the polarized 2020 presidential election. The ongoing debate centers on stricter voter identification and citizenship verification requirements advocated by Republicans, with Democrats expressing concerns about potential voting obstacles for certain groups. The discourse on voting regulations has intensified in various states, with legislative changes being introduced to address voter identification, mail-in ballots, and election administration ahead of future national elections.
