The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed optimism about the ongoing Ebola outbreak response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, after visiting the DRC, praised the country’s commitment to combat the outbreak. He highlighted a decrease in suspected cases from over 1,000 to 116, with 344 confirmed cases and 60 deaths across three provinces.
Tedros emphasized the need to enhance laboratory and diagnostic capabilities to expedite response decisions and address challenges such as contact tracing, travel restrictions disrupting supply chains, and community distrust. Despite these hurdles, a patient in Goma, North Kivu Province, was discharged after recovering from Ebola, bringing relief to their family.
The DRC government reported six recovered Ebola patients out of 344 confirmed cases. Medical organizations like Doctors Without Borders are leveraging existing systems to manage the outbreak, with an 80-bed treatment center established in Goma. The WHO reaffirmed its presence in the Kivu region, underscoring the ongoing response despite security and access difficulties in eastern DRC.
