The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal due to a low-pressure system over South India. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected in various parts of the state. Additionally, isolated places in these regions may experience heavy rainfall, especially in hilly areas like Tirunelveli, Theni, and Kanniyakumari districts.
The weather office has issued a warning of strong surface winds ranging from 40 kmph to 50 kmph during thunderstorm activity in these areas. Thursday’s forecast includes light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with continued heavy rain in isolated locations in hilly districts.
The upcoming days may see intensified rainfall in western and northern Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore district, the Nilgiris, and certain areas in Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, and Salem districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds. Meteorologists attribute this weather pattern to a low-pressure circulation over South India, drawing moisture and creating favorable conditions for rain.
Daytime temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to remain near normal levels despite the ongoing rainfall. Chennai and its suburbs may experience partly cloudy skies with light rain and thunderstorms in some areas during the evening or night, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 39 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to be cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially in districts prone to strong winds and heavy rain.
