Women voters in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry made a significant impact in the recent Assembly elections, surpassing men in voter turnout. In Kerala, women achieved a voting percentage of 81.19%, setting a new record compared to the 1987 Assembly polls. Assam saw a remarkable 86.50% turnout by women, breaking the previous record of 84.67% in the 2016 elections.
The trend continued in Puducherry, where women voters marked a historic 91.40% turnout, surpassing the 2011 elections. Election officials attribute the high overall voter turnout in these states to the enthusiastic participation of women voters. Kerala recorded an overall turnout of 78.27%, with men at 75.19%, slightly lower than previous records.
Assam witnessed a total voting percentage of 85.91%, surpassing Kerala’s previous high. Male voter turnout in Assam reached a record 85.33%. Puducherry also saw an impressive overall polling percentage of 89.87%, with male voters achieving a record 88.13% turnout. Across all three states, the combined male and female voter turnout exceeded the 2024 parliamentary elections.
