Fifty percent reservation for women in local self-government bodies was attributed to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the Congress party by Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil during his campaign for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections. Gohil highlighted that this measure had enhanced women’s involvement at the grassroots level. He emphasized that although a law for women’s reservations in Parliament and state assemblies was unanimously passed in 2023, it is yet to be enforced.
Gohil, while participating in campaign events and public interactions with party candidates and leaders, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly conducting corruption without restraint. He pointed out that contracts were granted to contractors only after adding “percentages” for party officials, leading to compromised infrastructure quality. Gohil urged the government to promptly implement the women’s reservation law and assured opposition parties’ support for any necessary amendments.
The MP underscored the importance of a strong opposition to prevent malpractices, citing instances of bridge collapses and inflated repair costs under the BJP’s rule. He appealed to voters to elect the Congress for a governance free of corruption. Gohil outlined the party’s agenda, promising affordable education, enhanced road infrastructure, improved water supply, drainage solutions, and traffic management strategies. Additionally, he pledged efforts to alleviate tax burdens, prevent arbitrary house demolitions, and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation policy.
