With global temperatures soaring and the looming return of El Nino, World Environment Day was observed worldwide on Friday, emphasizing the critical need to tackle climate change. Azerbaijan hosted the official events for this year’s World Environment Day.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, emphasized the urgency, stating that the world is on track for a temporary overshoot above 1.5 degrees Celsius. Urgent measures are required to cut emissions, transition to renewables, and adapt to escalating risks.
Officials at the Baku ceremony stressed the importance of collective and individual action to combat climate change and adjust to a changing environment. Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Rashad Ismayilov, highlighted the need for immediate action to address the global crisis.
Azerbaijan is actively working to mitigate climate impacts, including addressing the shrinking of the Caspian Sea. The country has committed to significant reductions in emissions by 2035, a substantial increase in renewable energy capacity, and active participation in global environmental initiatives.
