The Wrestling Federation of India has emphasized that Vinesh Phogat will participate in the Asian Games selection trials in the 50kg weight category. Despite the Supreme Court’s refusal to halt her participation as per the Delhi High Court’s ruling, the federation has specified her involvement in the 50kg division, where she competed in the Paris Olympics two years ago.
Vinesh Phogat, a renowned wrestler, is mandated to partake in the selection process solely in the 50kg weight class, as confirmed by WFI sources. The weigh-in is slated for early morning, with the federation’s decision potentially posing a challenge for Phogat, who recently switched from 57kg to 50kg.
The WFI’s directive comes just before the competition commences, seemingly aiming to create hurdles for Vinesh by requiring her to meet the weight criteria during the Saturday morning weigh-in. Vinesh, who initially competed in the 48kg category and later shifted to 51kg and then 53kg, has a successful track record in the 53kg division, securing medals at World Championships and the Tokyo Olympics.
Participating in both the 53kg and 50kg categories during the Paris Olympic Games trials, Vinesh ultimately qualified in the 50kg class. Despite reaching the final in the 50kg division at the Paris Olympics in 2024, she narrowly missed the weight requirement on the final morning.
The 31-year-old wrestler, part of the renowned Phogat sisters from Haryana, announced her retirement post the Paris Olympics but later reversed her decision in December 2025, aiming for the LA 2028 Olympics. Vinesh, who became a mother in July last year, is gearing up for a comeback to the wrestling arena.
