A project report is expected soon regarding the proposal to transfer Yamuna water from Haryana’s Hathnikund Barrage to Rajasthan to address summer drinking water shortages. Task Forces in both states are working on the detailed plan for transferring river water through underground pipelines for four months annually from July to October. The districts in Rajasthan set to benefit from this initiative include Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu.
Rajasthan has engaged a consultant to prepare the detailed project report, with a deadline of six months from the work order date of July 25, 2025. Previously, an MoU was signed between Haryana and Rajasthan to jointly develop the project for Yamuna water transfer. The Upper Yamuna River Board has allocated 577 Million Cubic Meters of Yamuna water to Rajasthan from July to October, ensuring no disruption to water availability in other states during the remaining months.
Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil confirmed that the first phase of the project involves transferring water through underground pipelines from July to October, up to 577 MCM, to meet the drinking water needs of Rajasthan districts. This transfer will occur after the full capacity utilization of the Western Yamuna Canal by Haryana, including Delhi’s share, at Hathnikund Barrage.
