A young couple, Nadia (20) and Najeebullah (25), were fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Pakistan’s Karachi. The couple, who married of their own accord, were attacked in their vehicle, with authorities suspecting it to be an honor killing case. The incident occurred as the couple was heading to a Nadra office in Saudabad after appearing in court.
Police reported that Nadia’s father had filed a kidnapping case after the couple’s marriage, leading to the arrest of Najeebullah’s father. Following the submission of their marriage certificate in court, the case was closed, and Najeebullah’s father was released. The armed assailants had been tracking the couple and attacked their vehicle after they left the court premises.
Honour killings remain a prevalent issue in Pakistan, with a recent report highlighting the challenges in prosecuting such cases. Weak investigations, judicial delays, and societal pressures often hinder the delivery of justice, as seen in the low conviction rates despite high numbers of reported incidents. Women, who constitute a significant majority of honour killing victims, face additional vulnerabilities in such cases.
