India’s young spinner Vaishnavi Sharma, aged 20, is looking to establish herself as a regular in the national team’s white-ball plans following a strong start to her international career. Making her senior India debut against Sri Lanka in Vizag, Vaishnavi bowled a tight four-over spell, conceding 0/16 at an economy rate of 4 in India’s convincing eight-wicket victory. Despite not taking any wickets, she showcased excellent control and discipline, restricting the Sri Lankan batters from scoring boundaries. Vaishnavi appeared composed in her debut at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium and seamlessly integrated into the team.
In a post-match interview, Vaishnavi admitted to feeling nervous before the game but mentioned that her anxiety subsided once the match began. Looking ahead, she expressed her happiness at executing her plans and emphasized that there are four more matches remaining in the series.
Vaishnavi earned her first international cap after an impressive performance at the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, where she emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an outstanding average of 4.35. With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup approaching in less than six months, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur had hinted at providing opportunities to emerging talents during the series. Vaishnavi is now focused on seizing her opportunity and turning her aspirations into reality.
“We have worked hard for this. Our dream is to represent India and contribute. I can’t say much about the future. Let’s leave it to God,” Vaishnavi remarked.
